How to protect your floor from the cold.

Discover how to protect your wood floor from winter’s hidden damage with simple, effective tips.

January 20, 2026

Winter isn’t your floor’s best friend.

Snow, salt, and slush come inside on your boots. They get lodged in treads and drip onto warm wood surfaces. The result is stains, dents, and shrinkage: a slow and steady attack on your flooring. But with a few simple precautions, winter can be kept in check. Here’s how to protect your wood floor from the season’s challenges.

[01] Entry Mats: Your first line of defence.

Think of your entry as a filtration zone. Outside, place a stiff mat to knock off salt, grit, and snow before they enter your space. Cocomats work well. They are natural, durable, and available in many sizes.

Inside, use an absorbent mat with a rubber backing to catch water and melting snow. This mat creates a buffer zone between your footwear and the floor.

In high-traffic areas like stores, mats should be long enough for shoes to dry before reaching wood surfaces. It’s also helpful to have two sets of mats. While one is in use, the other can be cleaned or replaced.

[02] Cold air can cause shrinking.

Cold drafts don’t just make a room uncomfortable. They also cause stress to wood floors. If your flooring extends to an exterior door or window, check the seals and weather-stripping. In spaces with frequent opening and closing of doors, such as shops, consider adding a curtain or barrier to reduce cold air flow.

[03] Salt is the hidden enemy.

Salt is one of the most damaging substances for wood. It scratches, stains, and leaves behind residue. Even with proper matting, some salt may get inside. Look out for white rings or gritty patches. Sweep them up as soon as possible. If puddles or salt trails keep appearing, it may be time to upgrade your matting.

Protecting your wood floor during the winter doesn’t take much. All it requires is a few key tools and thoughtful habits. With the right setup, your floor will remain safe, warm, and beautiful throughout the season and beyond.
