HOW TO INSTALL HERRINGBONE PLANKS
A detailed installation & care guide
BEFORE YOU BEGIN
Please read this guide thoroughly before starting installation. The Relative Space Chico Collection features finely crafted hardwood with natural variations in tone, texture, and grain. These distinctions add character and are not considered flaws. This guide ensures proper installation and longlasting beauty of your floor.
REVIEW YOUR ORDER
- Inspect all boxes upon delivery for consistency and visible damage.
- Natural wood variation is expected—mix planks from different boxes for a balanced look.
- Allow 5–10% extra material for trimming, patterning, and future repairs.
REQUIRED MATERIALS
FOR INSTALLATION
- Moisture barrier (especially for concrete or radiant-heated subfloors)
- Approved adhesive or underlayment (depending on glue-down or floating method)
- Flooring spacers (for expansion gaps)
- Rubber mallet and tapping block
- Hardwood-compatible saw (e.g., miter or jigsaw)
- Measuring tape, chalk line
SUBFLOOR PREPARATION
- Ensure the subfloor is flat, clean, dry, and stable.
- Acceptable subfloors: plywood, OSB, concrete (with barrier), radiant-heated floors (check compatibility).
- Follow manufacturer’s moisture level guidelines to prevent flooring issues.
TILES INSTALLATION — STEP BY STEP

DRY LAYOUT
- Distribute planks for even visual variation.
- Acclimate unopened boxes in the installation area for 48–72 hours.

Installation Method
- Choose glue-down, floating, or nail-down based on plank specs and subfloor type.
- Maintain a ½ inch expansion gap around walls, built-ins, orvertical surfaces using spacers.

Installation Process
- Begin from a straight wall, using tapping block and mallet to secure tight seams.
- Trim planks carefully to fit using suitable hardwood saws.

Post-Installation
- Clean up sawdust and debris immediately after installing.
- Limit heavy traffic for at least 24 hours post-installation to allow adhesives or finishes to cure.
FINISH-SPECIFIC CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE
Matte UV Lacquer Finish
- Use a pH-neutral cleaner approved for lacquered hardwood.
- Avoid water pooling, steam mops, wax, or abrasive cleaners.
- Dry mop or use a microfiber cloth dampened with cleaner for routine care.
- Vacuum frequently with a soft brush head to avoid scratches.
Natural Oil Finish
- Clean only with products formulated for oiled wood.
- Re-oil every 6–12 months in high-traffic areas to restore finish.
- Avoid acidic or ammonia-based cleaners.
- Use a lightly damp mop and dry immediately with a soft cloth.
- Spot treat with maintenance oil for scratches or worn areas.
INSTALLATION SAFETY
- Always wear safety glasses (or goggles) and gloves to protect your eyes and hands while cutting and installing flooring.
- Work in a well-ventilated area, especially when using adhesives or finishes.
- Avoid inhaling dust by cutting wood outdoors or in well-ventilated spaces.
- Wash your hands thoroughly after handling adhesives, finishes, or wood dust—especially before eating or drinking.
- Keep tools and materials out of reach of children and follow all safety instructions.
