Decorate for Halloween with spooky style while keeping your floors scratch-free and damage-free.

There are endless ways to decorate for Halloween, be it spookier designs, carved pumpkins, or candles.

When it comes to Halloween Decor, it is easy to forget about your floor. With heavy decorations and sticky messes, you may damage your floor.

No matter what type of floor you have- hardwood, engineered hardwood, laminate, or vinyl- a few precautions can save your floors.

[01] Use Protective Mats Under Decorations

Large Halloween decorations like skeletons, statues, and even large pumpkins have sharp edges that can lead to scratches.

Place felt pads or cloth sheets beneath them to minimize scratches and scuffing.

If you have wood flooring, make sure the underlying surface is clean and dry. Dirt between the mat and the floor could cause scratches on your floor.

Use rubber-backed mats only if recommended by the flooring manufacturer.

[02] Be Careful With Fake Blood and Decorative Liquids

Halloween-related liquids like artificial blood and colored beverages can cause stains on the floor. Certain dyes in these items can be hard to clean.

Therefore, prevent messy liquids from getting on carpets and wood floors. In case there is a spill, clean it up immediately with a damp cloth.

[03] Choose Battery-Operated Candles

While candles can set a spooky tone for Halloween, wax can be hard to clean off floors, and an accidental knock can cause burns, apart from the safety hazard posed by open flames.

Battery-powered candles come in handy at such times. They give the same warm light without wax and heat. They can be placed near pumpkins, windows, stairs, and entrances.

[04] Avoid Sticky Tape Directly on the Floor

Some Halloween decorations can be paper spiders, webs, arrows, and thematic signs. While you may use tape to hold decorations in place, it leaves sticky residue or peels off the protective layer upon removal.

Consider using removable hooks on appropriate walls, free-standing decorations, or wall-safe mounting devices that have been tested on your flooring material.

[05] Keep Pumpkins and Other Natural Decorations Dry

Though real pumpkins are visually appealing whether placed outdoors or indoors, they tend to emit moisture as they get older. Placing a pumpkin on hardwood floors and laminate is not a good idea, as they can become stained, swollen, or scratched.

Laying out a tray or a mat before placing any pumpkin decoration is essential, especially on wood flooring. Moisture needs to be checked frequently.

[06] Protect Floors in High-Traffic Areas

With more activities during the holiday, there will be more people in the same spaces. Shoes could bring in dirt, grit, and moisture, which could scratch the floor.

Place a heavy-duty doormat at the entrance and ask visitors to wipe their feet or take off their shoes inside the house. Where necessary, place a runner on the floor temporarily to protect the floor from damage.

[07] Clean Up Decorations Carefully

After you've enjoyed your Halloween festivities, take down your decorations carefully, lifting rather than dragging the heavier items and cleaning dust, debris, or residue before storing away.

Clean using a soft broom or a vacuum appropriate for your flooring. In the case of engineered hardwood, it is recommended to clean according to the manufacturer's instructions, since too much water should not be used on this type of flooring.
